Park Jefferson International Speedway
104 Cars Roar to Opening Night of Iron Cup
A huge field of 104 cars roared to life at night 1 of the Iron Cup as drivers from accross the upper midwest hit Park Jefferson on a warm September evening.
In the SignMasters Modifieds, it was Anthony Roth, early season winner, reclaiming the crown as he roared from deep in the field to take the win over RIcky Stephan and Speed Schneiders. At the start, it was Schneiders who was able to get an early jump on the field and roared around the dry surface. A handful of mid race cuations allowed Roth to work the high side of the track and using the Delaware Double file restart, to take the point with 5 to go. Stephan eeked by Speed to take runner up honors.
The J&J Fitting Stock Cars saw a wild and wooley race that resulted in Zach Olivier picking up his 2nd checkered flag in as many nights. Olivier, who picked up a win mid season, has been gaining in confidence at the Union County Oval and too honors over Todd Gereu and Kevin Bruck.
The IMCA Sprint Cars put on another great night with Casey Abbas adding to his win totals at Park. While Abbas was able to roar to the top spot, eyes were on Jack Dover, multi time winner in the 360 division. Dover used the setup from the 360 car to pick up the 2nd over newcomer Danny Nekolite.
The IMCA Hobby Stocks were full of sparks and controversy as Zach Olmstead invaded and bested 9 time winner Andy Hoffman for top honors. The scary part of the evening was a huge wreck between Gavin Gilbertson and Paul Menard which saw the 88 car jump the wall and tear up the front stretch. Gilbertson was ok and the wall survived but a scary incident for flagman Gary Garrells to ended up with stitches after the event. Jeff Ware finished third.
The Schaeffer Oil Sport Modifieds saw Cody Thompson take the win over the Vermillion Viper, Karl Brewer and Trent Roth. Thompson, who has had a great first year in the sport mod, was able to motor around to pick up the win in a hotly contested race. Brewer continues his mastery of slick surfaces to take 2nd.
In the Fox 620 Sport Compacts it was Andy Harris in the Thompson 15 picking up the win over David Bates and Luke Jackson
Championship Night of the Iron Cup is tonight. Gates open early at 4pm with Hot Laps slated for 5:30 and racing to follow. The Nebraska 360s vs MSTS will highlight the card. Adults $15, Seniors 70+ $10, Children 6-16 $5.
