Lutz takes home $10,000 to cap Park Jeff Opener
On a night that saw a near capacity crowd fill the Park Jefferson Speedway Grandstand, it was a South Dakota native taking home the largest first place check this year in the state of South Dakota as Eric Lutz trumped 37 other cars to win the 1st ever South Dakota Sprint Car Nationals presented by Pepsi.
Lutz started outside row one in the feature, but it was second starting Greg Bakker who got the jump on the outset and roared out to an early lead. Bakker was followed by pole sitter Thomas Kennedy and Eric Lutz on a quickly drying track. Bakker continued his domination over the field until a handful of cautions bunched the field back up. As Bakker attempted to move around the lapped machine of Donovan Peters, Lutz was able to get the jump and move into the top spot that he would never relinquish. Lutz held the point through 2 more cautions, and every time Bakker would get a run Lutz was able to hold him off to take home his largest check ever. Greg Bakker finished in second and took home $4,000. In the closing laps, it was Jack Dover who snuck underneath Winnipeg Canda's Thomas Kennedy who finished 4th. Drivers battled a second night of challenging track conditions which saw rubber take hold early in the feature event. The twin consolations were taken by Dusty Ballenger and Jason Martin.
In the Keizer Wheels IMCA RACESaver Sprint Cars it was Jason Martin sweeping the weekend. Martin utilized the top side of the speedway to find traction and was able to take advantage of his pole position starting spot. Dusty Ballenger came from the 4th row to finish second and Elliot Amdahl rounded out the top 3.
The Artworks Graphics IMCA Modifieds saw Jay Noteboom continue to pad his victory totals at Park by coming from deep in the field on to win. Noteboom saw a dramatic sixth to second pass negated with early yellows, then roared around the track on the ensuing green flags to jump to the top spot over 2017 Sport Mod champion Todd Boulware. Shane Demay and track champion Bob Moore rounded out the podium that saw a strong field of 22 modifieds.
Cody Thompson spent the second day confirming that he is ready to seize the mantle of top dog in the IMCA Sport Modieds as he followed up his opening night victory with a second victory on the young season. Karl Brewer and Rusty Montange had a fierce battle to open the feature, but a late yellow allowed Thompson to get the run on both top pilots to take home the checkers. Look for those three drivers to battle all year for IMCA Sport Mod supremecy.
Andy Hoffman picked up where he left off in the Z98 IMCA Hobby Stocks as he swept to victory lane. Hoffman had the covered early has he passed started on the front row next to Knoepfler Chevrolet top mechanic Kent Hustad. Hoffman was never seriously challenged in a 29 car event that saw numerous cautions. Hustand finished second and Corey Probst third.
Racing continues next weekend at Park Jefferson as Zeitner Trucking presents the Malvern Bank SLMR series along with the great weekly action at Park Jefferson.
