Noteboom and Dover take Park Jefferson Memorial Clash
On a racetrack that was arguably the best racing surface in the past 5 years at Park Jefferson, 110 cars swelled the pit area on a hot summer night the action was even hotter on the Union County oval. The Memorial Clash is quickly becoming a fan favorite at Park Jefferson as it features top open wheel pilots in sprint cars and open wheel modifieds vying for terrific purses. When it was all said and done, familiar names of Noteboom and Dover collected the winners checks and the prestige of winning the Park Jefferson Memorial Clash. The track was pleased to host members of the 185th Air Force Refueling wing as guests of the track this Memorial Day. The track also used this night to debut the new O'Reilly Auto Parts Scoreboard as the newest addition to the ever improving Park Jefferson.
In the Nebraska 360 vs MSTS event which paid $2,000 to winner, it was regional hot shoes Jack Dover and Greg Bakker who started alongside each other on the front row. Bakker jumped out to an early lead in the State Bank of Fairmont blue number eleven and led the first 10 circuits. Dover, who is the leading 360 sprint car driver at Park Jefferson, was able to power his way around Bakker utilizing his preferred top groove. Despite a handful of cautions, Dover powered away to a 5 second lead to take the checkers over Greg Bakker, Lee Grosz and 25 Nebraska 360 & MSTS Sprint Cars.
Jay Noteboom moved his name to 1 away from the immortal Joe Kosiski on the all time Park Jefferson winners list as he trumped a stout field of 24 Artworks Graphics Modifieds to take home the top spot. At the jump, it was Chad Ten Napel jumping out to the early lead followed by Bob Moore and Chris Abelson. Eventually Abelson wore down Ten Naple to take the point. Meanwhile there was a series of vicious sliders for the runner up spot at Bob Moore's purple 48 utilized a low to high slide to keep the rim riding Noteboom at bay. Noteboom and Moore swapped the runner up spot with Noteboom utilizing a wicked crossover move out of turn 2 to secure the runner up spot. Abelson, who appeared to have checked out and was possibly counting all $1,500 of the top spot, got loose between turns 3&4 and jumped the cushion. This allowed Noteboom to power away for his 3rd consecutive victory and allowed for a colorful post race interview discussing preferred driving lines around Park Jefferson. Abelson worked his way back to 2nd with rookie Todd Boulware finishing in third. Two drivers of note are now healthy Jim Cole taking third and Travis Hatchers remarkable run from 24th to 3rd, only to see a late race caution negate all his hard work.
In the IMCA RACESaver Sprints, it was Jason Martin making it a perfect 3 for 3 on the year at PJ. Martin was able to utilize hit hard hitting motor to win over Colin Smith of Sheldon and Elliot Amdahl. Two disqualifications for illegal motor components saw a shakeup in the final running order as it was not decided until well after racing completed.
Andrew Harris took a smooth victory in the IMCA Sport Compacts in the purple number 22 over tough running David Bates and Danny VanderVeen. It is of note that Bates was the real winner of the night as he got engaged to his longtime girlfriend.
Rusty Montague won a well deserved victory in the Sport Modifieds by taking the race lead over Kirk Beatty to power away for the win. Cody Thompson continues to show his pure talent by roaring to finish second on the night with Vermillions Karl Brewer coming in third.
Jason Ward, who in previous years avoided the Park Jefferson oval like the plague, now sits atop the point standings with his roaring finish in the J&J Fitting stock cars as he slid to the top spot in the closing laps. Ward, who is one of the top feature winners in the Siouxland history, was able to hold off Bo Lundquist and Ryan Harris for the checkers.
IMCA Weekly racing resumes next Saturday night as Park Jefferson will run its weekly IMCA Weekly program featuring IMCA Sprints, Artworks Graphics IMCA Modifieds, J&J Fitting IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA Sport Modifieds, Z98 IMCA Hobby Stocks and IMCA Sport Compacts.
