Park Jefferson International Speedway

Z98 night sees racing and rain lead to 6 checkered flags at PJ

Opening Night at the Park Jefferson Speedway was a night with twists and turns, fast cars and flips and weather. With track officials determined to beat the weather, racing was started an hour early on Saturday. After some competitive heat races in the Hobby Stocks, Sport Compacts and Sport Modifieds, Mother Nature joined the action and provided the track with a 2 hour rain delay followed by a spectacular double rainbow and sunshine. Thanks to a fantastic effort by track officials, push truck drivers and even some fans to roll the surface back in, racing resumed to see the finish of the opening night of racing sponsored by Z98 and the Iheart radio family. A huge thank you goes to all officials, drivers, crews and fans for sticking out the rain delay to get the opening night in the books.

In the Artworks Graphics Modifieds, it was Jason Schneider’s picking up a hard fought victory over local legend Racer Ricky Stephan. Stephan, who was racing with a heavy heart after the funeral of his father early in the day, put in an absolutely huge effort to lead the majority of the race. The former Park Jefferson track champion got the jump on the field and was able to work around the heavy black oval that required drivers to navigate a challenging surface. It was a late race caution that eliminated Stephan’s huge lead and gave Speed Schneider’s the opening he leaded. With a strong run, Schneider’s worked around Stephan to take the checkers after being the bridesmaid in many races during 2018. Stephan rewarded fans and family alike popular podium finish and third place went to Todd Boulware. Heats were won by Schneiders, Boulware and Daniel Loggins.

The Stevenson Hardware IMCA Sprint Cars saw Iowa racer Ryan Voss claim the checkered flags. Voss started in the second row and was able to work around the front row starters to claim a very popular victory. Voss has a long history of racing starting at the Jackson Speedway and is now a strong regional runner in the IMCA division. Brant O’Banion took the second spot in the Furby 20. It was newcomer Tim Fricke, who has taken over the helm on the Black Bear Racing 43 owned by Barry Banks, who finished third. Fricke looks to be force in the division this summer that will see a number of opportunities for local drivers like Sioux Cities Aaron Guillaume to compete with many Sioux Falls teams now racing at the I 90 Speedway. Heats were won by Fricke and the newly unretired John “Longhair” Lambertz.

The J&J Fitting Stock Cars saw an invader take the top spot with Colby Klassen picking up the victory. Klassen, who has been picking his races around the area this spring, was able to guide the yellow 34 car to a hard fought victory after a number of yellow flags slowed the action. He was able to take the checkers over multi time winner Zach Olivier and hard running Todd Gereau. Travis Barker and Jason Ward both passed a bunch of cars to let drivers know they will be in the hunt for the 2019 season. Heats were won be Ward, Olivier and Barker.

The Pizza Ranch Sport Modifieds saw tough luck by a number of drivers as the first few rows saw a number of DNF’s as drivers were navigating the tricky surface. When it was all over, Jeff Brunssen had a picked up another victory at Park Jefferson. Brunssen, who has been the top dog at the Wagner Speedway, has his new ride tuned to perfection and was able to hold off last year’s champion Rusty Montague for the win. It was Cade Richards finishing third. Heats were won by Kole Nordquist and Justin Klynsma.

The IMCA Hobby Stocks saw Justin Luinenburg invade from up north and was able to hold off 2018 track champion Andy Hoffman to capture the money. Luinenburg has been a strong runner at tracks along the I 90 corridor and is using some early season opportunities to pick and choose his races. Hoffman was the man on the charge that all were watching as he came from the fifth rows for second while Dawson Deboer was able to finish in third. Heats were won by Craig Clift, Luinburg, Lenny Tucker and Hoffman.

The IMCA Sport Compact the largest field in Park Jefferson history as Jared Gross was able to pick up the win over northern invader Bubba Brown. Gross was able to use his second row starting spot to his advantage as he was able to move around the first row starters to be able to take the lead mid race and then hold on for the final win. Rookie Carley Boulware impressed with a top 3 finish and is surely one to watch as the season progresses at Park Jefferson. Heats were won by Gross, Andy Harris and Conner Brown.

Racing continues this Saturday night as the track hosts its annual North vs. South Sprint Car shootout as the drivers of the Nebraska 360 Sprint Cars take on the northern based Midwest Sprint Touring Series. Joining them will be all 6 IMCA divisions in the second track point event of the season which will see handicapping implemented. Gates open at 4:30 for the pits and 5:00 for fans. Tickets for the sprint car special are $18 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for children 6-16 with under 6 free. For more information go to www.parkjeff.com.
