Inside Line Promotions – JEFFERSON, S.D. (May 21, 2019) – Kaleb Johnson earned a podium finish Saturday night at Park Jefferson International Speedway after weather altered his original racing schedule for the weekend.

With rain washing out races at Jackson Motorplex in Jackson, Minn., and at U.S. 36 Raceway in Osborn, Mo., on Friday as well as at Eagle Raceway in Eagle, Neb., on Saturday, Johnson was part of the 20-car 305 sprint car field for his first visit of the season to Park Jefferson International Speedway Saturday night.

His evening began well with a second-place heat race finish after starting fourth.

“I was able to move up to second right away, but I thought the track would have a little more moisture than it did,” he said. “I kind of stayed behind the leader for a while. Then Stu Snyder moved up and we raced back and forth for a few laps. That was fun. I barely beat him at the line to get second.”

Johnson started sixth in the feature.

“We tried something different with the car that we’d never done before so I didn’t know what to expect,” he said. “In a way it worked. We’ll just have to fine-tune it a bit.

“A couple of cars in front of us spun out and that moved us to second. Just like in the heat race, Stu moved up again toward the end and we raced side by side with him for about six or seven laps. It ended close again, but this time he beat me by a little bit at the finish for second. That was a lot of fun. It’s pretty cool to have someone race you close and clean without having to worry about them chopping you off or anything like that.

“To be honest, we probably had about a fifth- or sixth-place car. But we’re never ashamed of a top three. We just had some things go our way. There will be other nights when they don’t. It was another good learning experience for us.”

Johnson has an ambitious three nights of racing scheduled for this weekend, which includes the season debut of his 360 sprint car at Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, Iowa, on Friday during a Midwest Sprint Touring Series event. He also plans to race his 305 sprint car at Eagle Raceway on Saturday and at I-80 Speedway in Greenwood, Neb., on Sunday.

“I’m pretty excited about racing at Rock Rapids with our own 360 car,” he said. “We went there once last year, but we had motor problems and only ran a couple of laps. I’m anxious to see how the car does.”
