Park Jefferson International Speedway
Champions Aaron Reutzel and Cody Thompson pick up wins at Park Jefferson
The first ever visit of the All Star Circuit of Champions and the Interstate Racing Association saw beautiful blue skies and a strong field of 43 outlaw sprint cars along with 16 IMCA Sport Modifieds as Park Jefferson Speedway hosted the opening point night for the two series along with the opening point night of the IMCA Sport Modifieds. In then end, two defending champions sat in victory lane as 2019 All Star Champion Aaron Reutzel claimed the $6,600 top prize with the Ollies Bargain Barn All Stars and 2019 IMCA Sport Modified Champion Cody Thompson claimed the top prize in the Sport Modifieds.
Reutzel and Justin Henderson brought the 410 sprint cars to the initial green flag as the two battled hard into turn one. Reutzel, who led late in the 2020 Open Wheel Nationals at Park Jefferson in April, was able to then power away on the slick track utilizing a high line in turns one and two and the bottom of turns three and four. Meanwhile drivers from the back charged as the Rudeen Racing 26 piloted by Cory Eliason was determined to put on a show as he hammered the slim top groove of the facility in order to slip into second place. Henderson held of for third with Austin McCarl earning hard charger honors going from 17th to 6th. Quick time was set by Reutzel at Rookie Zeb Wise at just over 114 mph. Heats went to Sawyer Phillips, Eliason, Terry McCarl, Bill Balog and Kyle Offill. The C Main went to IRA runner Jake Blackhurst and the B Main to Hunter Schuerenberg. A huge donation by Park Jefferson supporter Kevin Rudeen pumped the purse up once again at Park Jefferson to pay out $6,600 for the top spot.
Cody Thompson went on a tear last season at Park Jefferson and got himself back into victory lane in a hard-fought victory. Thompson came from the fourth row to get by a number of tough runners for the win. James Roebuck proved he could quickly master the Park Jefferson surface as he roared out to an early lead after battling with James Richert. A mid race caution was all Thompson needed as he ran his patented outside/in move off turn 2 to take the top spot which he would not relinquish. Roebuck was second and Brian Osantowski was third.
Saturday is the final night of the 410 sprint car action this year at Park Jefferson Speedway. Joining them are the J&J Fitting IMCA Stock Cars which will run for $600 to win. Pit gates open at 2pm, fan entrance at 4pm with hot laps at 6:30. The ticket window opens at 4pm for fans. For more information go to www.parkjeff.com.(Photo credit to Rob Kocak)
